Silver Champleve Dial Pair Cased Verge

An early 18th Century English verge with champleve dial by Kipling in silver pair cases.  Deep full plate fire gilt movement with Egyptian pillars.  Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Pierced and engraved winged cock with mask depicting birds and foliage on the table, broad pierced and engraved foot.  Plain steel balance, silver regulator disc.  Signed silver champleve dial, Roman and Arabic numerals, blue steel beetle and poker hands. Matching plain silver pair cases, silver pendant and bow. Both cases bearing the number corresponding to that on the movement and maker’s mark “TI” blow a crown.  Outer case with seven joint square hinge and large faded monogram engraved on the back.

A good example of an early 18th Century English watch.  Unusually for the period both cases are numbered and marked.  William Kipling 1705 – 37 a find maker who often incorporated decorative features on his movements such as depictions of the monarch.   The centre of champleve dials in later examples commonly are signed in a distinctive manner of two rectangles.  Casemaker Thomas Jenkins.
